Technologies That Aid Manipulation and Control of Environment - Glossary of Terms

Alternative - This means another choice or possibility.
Example:  A choice between two or more answers.

Augmentative - The ability to increase the force of your idea or word.
Example:  An example includes gestures or body language.

Desktop Robots – This is the concern of the control of semi-autonomous robots from a distance.
Example:  Semi-autonomous robots from a distance

Electrically Powered Feeders - These are circuits which carry a large block of power from the service equipment to a sub-feeder panel.
Example:  A conductor in conduit or a busway run.

Electronic Aid to Daily Living – this provides alternative tools to operate and control electronic devices through an external switch.
Example: Switch and voice activation systems
Environmental Control Units – These are units or various apparatus used by disable people  that control devices such as lamps, television, radio, telephone, and alarm systems.
Example: A television remote control

General-Purpose Manipulation Devices – These are devices that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations automatically.
Example:  A computer

Head Pointers – an aid for people who have limited hand use and can be used for activities such as turning pages, drawing or painting.
Example:  These can be used as a keyboard aid, pencil holder, for turning pages, drawing, painting and pushing in switches

Infrared Transmission – These are TV remote controls and wireless slide projector remote controls.
Example:  Energy in the region of electromagnetic radiation spectrum

Mobile Assistive Robots – This is the capability to transport objects for persons with mobility impairments.
Example:  Service dogs assisting quadriplegic owners

Mouthsticks - A prosthesis held by the teeth used by handicapped people to perform such actions as computer keyboarding, painting, and lifting small objects.
Example:  A mouth stick is just what its name implies: a stick that is placed in the mouth.

Programmable Controllers - Is a digital computer used for automation of typically industrial electromechanical processes.
Example:  A PLC is an example of a "hard" real-time system since output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a limited time, otherwise unintended operation will result.

Radio Frequency Transmission - Is a rate of oscillation in the range of around 3 kHz to 300 GHz, which corresponds to the frequency of radio waves, and the alternating currents which carry radio signals.
Example:  Power transmission

Reachers - These are durable aluminum which is extremely lightweight and high quality
Example:  They lessen the pain in hips and knees and they also prevent slow recovery from surgery and reduce the risk of falling.

Remote Control – This is an electronics device commonly used for operating the device wirelessly from a short line-of-sight distance.
Example:  A television set

Robotic Systems – A system in tactical autonomous robotics and command and control technologies that is used to manage a tele operated and autonomous system.
Example:  Deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots

Special-Purpose Manipulation Devices – A custom power control apparatus outputs AC power with characteristics relative to the AC power input.
Example: Outputs AC power

Telephone Controllers – The controllers provides remote control of heating, lighting or watering systems, water heater or any other device.
Example:  Temperature of a thermostat

Trainable Controllers - A trainable transceiver for learning signal characteristics of an RF control signal received from a remote control transmitter.
Example:  A method for determining the frequency of a learned control signal.

Ultrasonic Transmission – A family of non-destructive testing techniques that is based in the propagation of ultrasonic waves in the object or material tested.
Example:  Non-destructive testing techniques

Universal Remote - A remote control that can be programmed to operate various brands of one or more types of consumer electronics devices.

Example:  A remote control that can be programmed to operate various brands of one or more types of consumer electronics devices.
